In Besancon a 17th-century citadel looms over old town which offers stunning views of surrounding hills, this city offers a Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology. While the Old town features architecture from the 16th to the 18th centuries, a cathedral and remarkable astronomical clock.
Jura Mountains:
The folds of the Jura run parallel to the Franco-Swiss border and offer a wealth of small lakes, gorges, caves and forested mountains. The area's numerous waterfalls are remarkable: Cascades du Hérisson, Source de la Loue, Saut du Doubs. The highest peak is Crête de la Neige (1,723 m/5,650 ft).
